State Aquatic Centre, Marion SA
Builder: Candetti Constructions
Location: Marion, South Australia
Estimated Worth: $120 Million
Completion Date: Early 2011

The new State Aquatic Centre Marion, South Australia is a $120 Million project that will put South Australia on the map with world class swimming, diving and leisure activities. Built by Candetti Constructions, this enormous facility comprises not only a FINA compliant lap pool, and diving and water polo pools, but also has another 1000m2 of recreational pool areas and seating for 4500 spectators.

Rondo provided GMR Interiors with the technical design support needed for this outstanding project, which incorporated Steel Stud Drywall Framing Systems for exterior walls and interior partitions, as well as KEY-LOCK® Concealed Suspended Ceiling Systems.

Rondo’s Technical Services team were able to provide design solutions for challenging areas in the project, including a heavy gauge 150mm Steel Stud Wall Framing System which required alignment with, as well as concealing, the structural frame of the building, and a 6m high internal dividing wall that was subjected to significantly higher internal pressures due to the louvers installed.

Throughout the curved segment of roof, the architect required a 6mm Villaboard lining to Furring Channels with a 12m radius, which also presented some challenges, as the ceiling area is located directly over the main lap pool.

Rondo’s Technical Services team provided the solution by designing a Rondo KEY-LOCK® direct fix ceiling system using Rondo’s 129 Furring Channel, as well as Rondo’s new 155 Express Joint Furring Channel. This system ensured adequate movement allowance for both thermal and normal building movement, in addition to achieving a unique architectural finish with expressed panel joints along the radius contour of the structure.
