Morcom Scores First Formula Ford Win

Rondo sponsored teenager Nathan Morcom, has continued his impressive debut year in Formula Ford by registering his first race win in the category last weekend at the fourth and penultimate round of the Victorian Formula Ford 1600 Championship at Winton Motor Raceway.

Morcom’s first race win came during the opening race when he started from the front row after qualifying in second, and the 16-year-old Anglo Australian Motorsport driver caught and passed pole sitter and V8 Supercar driver Taz Douglas, who has over three years of Formula Ford experience at both a State and National level, during the middles stages of the six lap race and went on to score a solid victory aboard is # 71 Rondo Building Services backed Comtec Spirit WL08.

A mistake at the beginning of the second race while he sat on pole position, stalled on the grid, dropped Morcom to the back of the field and he showed great maturity to fight his way back to finish in eighth place at the completion of the 8 lap journey.

In the third and final race, over a distance of 10 laps and the last race for the weekend that counted towards points in the Victorian Championship, saw Morcom start from position eight on the grid and he managed to work his way up to finish just off the podium in fourth.

The fourth race, which didn’t count towards the Victorian Championship point score, resulted in Morcom working his way back up to the pointy end of the field and he finished in second place behind fellow Anglo Australian Motorsport team mate and good friend Nicholas Tanti.

For Morcom the experience to visit a new circuit and also score his maiden race win in a Formula Ford made the weekend very enjoyable.

“It is a very competitive field in the Victorian Championship and it was pleasing to come away knowing that I was right up there amongst the front runners from the word go,” he said.

“Visiting new circuits are always an experience, as you are not too sure about how you will go, but it’s great to have such a strong and experienced team behind me like Anglo Australian Motorsport to rely on.

“The highlight of my weekend was without a doubt winning my first race in Formula Fords, as I have won plenty of Go Kart races, but it’s always a special moment when you win your first race in a new category.”

In between now and Morcom’s next appearance, the sixth and final round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship at Eastern Creek Raceway on September 27 – 28, he is in the final process of evaluation for the 2009 CAMS Rising Star program that will two drivers contest the Australian Formula Ford Championship.

Morcom in 2008 is proudly supported by Rondo, Plastamasta Smithfield – Campbelltown and Canberra, and NSW Stretch Ceilings.
